Who's Been

Beaumaris and the region has long been a gateway to Anglesey's rich history and culture.
After establishing one of his finest and most effective Castles at Beaumaris, Edward 1st made the new town of Beaumaris - beautiful marsh'. Open throughout the year the Castle has now been designated by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site.

Many features of Beaumaris' time as an administrative and legal centre remain. The Courthouse of 1614 stands opposite the Castle. It is open to the public in summer, and with its polished wood railing and flagstones it remains much as it would have looked in the last century.

Less sentimental memories of Victorian Beaumaris may be evoked by a visit to Beaumaris Gaol in Steeple Lane. Built by Hansom in 1829 it was designed as a model prison. Many poor as well as criminal people suffered hardship here, and the last man to hang was Richard Rowlands ('Dic Rolant') who cursed the Church clock opposite as he climbed the scaffold in 1862.

Beaumaris has the air of an historic town that has welcomed travellers from all over the world. It has not been spoilt by the passage of time, but has embraced all the different trends and influences, this vibrant mix of the old and new, local and exotic gives the town its unique cosmopolitan flavour.

Mae Beaumaris a’r ardal wedi bod yn fynedfa i hanes a diwylliant Ynys Môn am amser maith.
Ar ôl sefydlu un o’i Gestyll mwyaf effeithiol ym Beaumaris, creuodd Edward 1af y dref newydd o Beaumaris – "beautiful marsh". Mae ar agor drwy’r flwyddyn, mae’r castell nawr wedi cael ei ddynodi gan yr Cenedlaethau Unedig fel Safle Etifeddiaeth Bydol.

Mae llawer o nodweddau hen i Beaumaris fel canolfan gweinyddiol a chyfreithiol wedi aros. Hyd heddiw mae’r Llys o 1614 yn sefyll gyferbyn a’r Castell. Mae ar agor i’r cyhoedd yn yr haf, a gyda’i reiliau pren a’i fflaglenni, mae’n aros yn debyg i sut bysai’n edrych yn y ganrif diwethaf.

Buasai atgofion llai teimladol o Beaumaris o amser Victoria, yn cael eu galw trwy ymweliad i’ r Carchar Beaumaris yn "Steeple Lane". Wedi ei adeiladu gan Hansom yn 1829, ‘roedd wedi ei ddylunio fel carchar model. Dioddefodd llawer o pobl tlawd yn ogystal a troseddwyr yma, a’r dyn diwethaf i'w grogi oedd Richard Rowlands (‘Dic Rolant’) – meilltithiodd gloc yr eglwys wrth iddo ddringo’r scaffold yn 1862.

Mae ganmare Beaumaris awyrgylch o dref hanesyddol sydd wedi croesawu teithwyr ar draws y byd i gyd. Dydy o ddim wedi cael ei ddifetha gan amser, ond wedi cofleidio pob mathau o dueddau a dylanwadau, y cymysgedd o’r hen a’r newydd, lleol ac estron, sy’n rhoi blas cosmopolitan unigryw i’r dref.
